Melvin M. Tucker, 87, of Brandon, IA, died on Saturday April 18th at his home in Brandon, IA.
Melvin was born on December 4, 1932 in Milan, MN; the son of William Henry and Mildred Marie (Portwine) Tucker. He moved with his family to different farms in northwest Iowa as a young child. The family eventually settled in Strawberry Point, IA.
On April 28, 1953 he was united in marriage to Lois Marian Newcomb in Marion, IA. They spent the next 61 years happily married. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids and Evansdale before moving to Brandon in 1976.
Melvin began his working career at Rath Packing in Cedar Rapids, IA before moving on to Herst Construction, where he spent more than 30 years as a heavy equipment operator. He retired at the age of 82 but kept up an active lifestyle.
In his free time, Melvin enjoyed deer hunting. He also liked cars and used to collect and trade different cars until he found one to his liking. Melvin was known to try his luck at local casinos and looked forward to the family reunions when he could put his poker skills on display. He also enjoyed the time he spent with his dogs Zelda and Tiger.
Melvin is survived by his children Franklin (Theresa) Tucker of Brandon, Jerry Lynn (Mike) Menney of Jesup, IA, Debra (Mark) McConnell of Waterloo, IA, Kevin (Tammi) Tucker, and Tom (Becky) Tucker both of Cedar Rapids, IA; 21 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren 2 great great grandchildren; his brother Russell (Jerry) Tucker of Evansdale, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lois; his brothers Casey and Lorell Tucker; and his sister JoAnne Jaster.
A celebration of life and graveside service will be held at a later date.
