Joshua Daniel Schmitt was born March 29, 1988 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Daniel and Jari (Daniels) Schmitt. He grew up on a farm near Winthrop and attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He attended school at East Buchanan, was a member of the trap shooting team, and graduated with the high school class of 2006. He continued his education at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo where he received his welding certificate in 2012.

Josh worked with his father Dan at Schmitt Equipment, as well as starting Schmitt Welding and Repair near Winthrop. He was also a team member at A Cut Above Metal Works. Prior to that, he worked at Black Widow Diesel in Center Point, Wieland & Sons in Winthrop, and Joel’s Tractors in Strawberry Point.

Josh loved Oliver tractors, going to farm auctions, and working with cattle. His favorite activities included spending time in the shop with his friends, shooting pool, and fishing (especially with his friends on their trips to the cabin in Michigan). He also loved spending time with his niece Maizie, his dog Shinook, and cat Memphis.

Josh died unexpectedly from a vehicle accident on Thursday, November 28, 2019.

Survivors include his parents Daniel and Jari Schmitt of Winthrop, his two sisters: Traci Schmitt of Waterloo and Staci (Andy) Osborn of Winthrop; his niece Maizie Osborn, many aunts and uncles and other family members. He also leaves behind many good friends who were a second family to him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Richard and Marguerite (Ortner) Schmitt; James E. and Royale (Halverson) Daniels; and two uncles: Andrew and Vincent Schmitt.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family to be decided at a later date.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 14, 2019 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Winthrop with burial in St. John's Cemetery at Independence. Visitation will be from 3 PM until 7 PM on Friday, December 13, 2019 at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop.
