Robert E. Higdon, Sr., 88, of Independence, Iowa died Sunday morning, September 15, 2019 at his home.

Robert Earnest Higdon was born March 18, 1931 in Arkansas, the son of Horace and Jessie Carrol (Snell) Higdon. He proudly served in the in the United States Army. On May 28, 1966, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Jean Beatty at Hazleton, Iowa. Robert was employed at John Deere in Waterloo and retired in 1975 after 19 years of service. He enjoyed singing, playing guitar, good food, fishing, camping and telling stories.

Robert is survived by his wife: Marilyn Higdon of Independence; 12 children: Nelda Sue, Gene, Dean, Bob Jr., Brenda, John, Carol, Pam Dalton of Independence, Neil Higdon of Independence, Irene Gerken of Independence, Jessie Pullin of Waterloo and Samuel Higdon of Texas;and many grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and 6 siblings: Earl, Sam, Horace, Jim, William and Elouise.
Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 19, 2019 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa with Pastor John Sheda officiating.

Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 18, 2019 and for one hour before the service at the funeral home on Thursday.

Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein with military honors.
