WM. QUICK
(Lamont Leader)

William Lodar Quick was born in Hammondsport, Steuben County, N. Y., Aug. 26, 1834. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Kelsh, Lamont, Iowa, on Feb. 16, 1920.
In 1853, October 2nd , he was married to Mary Townsend who was born in Steuben County, N. Y. five children were born to this union.. three of whom died when they were small and two are still living, Mrs. Geo. Bills, of Clint, Texas and Mrs. Thomas Kelsh, of Lamont, Iowa.

When he was twenty one years of age he came west to Iowa and located in Delaware County, near Strawberry Point. Here he remained two years then moved to Buchanan County, Madison Township, three-fourths mile west of Ward’s corner.

In 1874 he moved to Ward’s Corner and engaged in the mercantile business in a store which stood just across the street west of the present creamery.

Later in 1886 he built the first store building on the same site where later the brick building known as the Quick Building was built. Since that time he has been active in business but has lived a retired life.

While still upon the farm he taught school for sixteen winters, thirteen at Ward’s Corner. For one term he was Mayor of Lamont, at which time M. P. Sager was Past Chancellor; H. L. Darby Chancellor Commander; and John Carr the Master of Exchequer. he enjoyed the fellowship of the members very much.

At the time of the building of the Methodist Church he was very interested and gave the ground upon where the church was erected and became an official member of the church board in which capacity he served for some time.

For many years he has been the “oldest citizen” of Lamont and in his passing one of the most familiar figures has gone from our midst. He had closely identified with all the life and development of our town. He surveyed and platted all of the northern section.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church Friday morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. Pease officiating. Interment was at the Campton Cemetery, the K. P. Lodge having charge of the services at the grave. J. P. Carr, Simon Cole, J. D. Thompson, Wm. Dopp, Perry Thompson and E. A. Wing were casket bearers.
