Yvo L. Lau, 82, of Independence, died Sunday morning, October 21, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 26, at the Christ United Presbyterian Church in Oelwein with Rev. Kent Leydens and Pastor Duane Olsen officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.

Yvo Lester Lau was born January 11, 1936 in Independence, the son of Clarence L. and Isabelle A. (Beck) Lau. He lived in Oelwein until the age of 17, and then moved with his family to Fayette. He attended the rural Crowfoot School in Oelwein. Following the death of his parents, Yvo continued to live in Fayette with his brother, Clarence Lau, Jr. Upon the death of Clarence, Jr. in 1993, Yvo moved to Aurora, where he lived with his sister and brother-in-law. Delores and Ron Kaiser. In 1995, he moved to Alternative Living Corporation in Oelwein until December of 2014, when he moved back to his sister's home near Aurora. In 2015, moved to East Town Care Center in Independence.

Yvo was employed by Goodwill Industries until his retirement in 2005. While on the farm he enjoyed cattle, working in the garden, driving tractor as well as other farm chores. He also enjoyed bowling, singing and traveling.

Yvo is survived by his sister: Delores (Ron) Kaiser of Aurora; brother, Ron (Geri) of Astor, Florida; sisters-in-law: Margie Lau of Fayette, Dorothy Lau of Fayette, Prudy Lau of Rockford, Illinois, Donna Lau of Wisconsin, and Jan Lau of Oelwein; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers: Lyle, Virgil, Roland, Clarence Jr., Duane, Dale, and Darrel; two sisters: Dorothy Groskurth and Leola Lau; sister-in-law, Bernice Lau; brother-in-law, Leon Groskurth; four nephews: Steve Lau, Shawn Lau, Kenneth Lau and Larry Lau; two nieces: Vicky Lau Northey and Barbara Lau Imig; and great niece Chandra Lau Stannard.
