Dean Ervin Schommer was born July 4, 1929 in Perry Township of Buchanan County, the son of Peter and Minnie Niedert Schommer.

Dean served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953. He was stationed in Alaska.
Dean was united in marriage to Dorene Neuhaus on August 17, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont, Iowa. They farmed in the Lamont-Masonville area for many years. To this union were born six children: Kathy, Nancy, Judy, Gary, Becky, and Jim. Dean worked on the farm and also at Iowa Man Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids. In 1994 he retired and they moved into Lamont. They were active members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Lamont American Legion. Dean loved singing songs and could whistle like no other. He also liked playing softball, cards, and partying, especially on his July 4 birthday. Dorene entered into her eternal rest on August 21, 1996. In July, 2012 Dean moved to Prairie Hills Assisted Living at Independence.

Dean Ervin Schommer, 89, of Independence, formerly of Lamont and Masonville, entered into his eternal rest at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Independence, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorene, three granddaughters, two brothers: Duane and an infant brother, and two sisters: Darlene Eimers and Dorothy Ciesielski.

Survivors include his four daughters: Kathy and Randy , , of Winthrop; Nancy and Denny Donahue of Independence; Judy and Mike Hubbell of Marion; and Becky and Rick Peyton of Winthrop; two sons: Gary and Dee Danehy-Schommer of Jesup; and Jim and Lori (Salter) Schommer of Birmingham, Alabama; twenty two grandchildren; thirty nine great grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 6, 2018 at ST. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop with Father David Beckman officiating. Interment with military rites by the Lamont American Legion at St. Albert’s Cemetery east of Lamont.

Friends may call from 3 PM until 6 PM Sunday, August 5 at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop where a scripture service will be held at 3 PM Sunday.
