Dolores A. Shannon 74, of Independence, Iowa died Monday, August 14, 2017 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA.

Dolores was born on May 6, 1943 in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Christian S. and Lelia E. (Kane) Strief. She attended Hopkinton Elementary School, and graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in 1961. She went on to study at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA. On April 20, 1963 she married Russell Dean Shannon in Hopkinton, IA, and they made their home in Independence, IA. Dolores worked as a rural postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years. She also worked at the Mental Health Institute and B & D Services both in Independence.

She is survived by her children Pat Shannon, Independence, IA, Nancy Shannon, Newton, IA, Beth (Randy) Koppes, Iowa City, IA, Mike (Lori) Shannon, Independence, IA, and Tim (Tina) Shannon Marion, IA, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a sister Sandy Winterowd, Batavia, IL, two brothers; Jim Strief, Leclaire, IA, and Bob Strief, Olathe, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband Russell Shannon, parents and a brother Gary Strief.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. David Beckman presiding.

Burial will be held St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Independence, IA.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 PM Wednesday and at 9 AM until 10 AM on Thursday morning at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA. A Rosary service will be held at 2 PM, and a Parish Vigil Service at 8 PM on Wednesday.
