Leah K. Johnston, 98, of Hazleton, formerly of Oelwein, Iowa died Monday evening, August 29, 2016 at Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Christ United Presbyterian Church in Oelwein with Rev. John Kerr officiating. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:30 P.M. on Friday at the Floral Hills Funeral Home, rural Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Order of the Eastern Star Service: 6:30 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein. Memorials may be given in her name to the donor’s charity of choice.

Leah Katherine Tempus was born March 29, 1918 in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Peter F. & Gertrude Irene (Maas) Tempus. She graduated from Oelwein High School in the Class of 1936. Leah was united in marriage to Glenn George Johnston on November 8, 1936 at the Presbyterian manse in Oelwein, Iowa. The couple owned and operated Johnston’s Shoe and Saddlery in Oelwein for over 50 years.

Leah was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein Chapter #45 Order of the Eastern Star for 66 years; El Kahir Shrine Auxiliary and the Oelwein American Legion Auxiliary. Leah enjoyed quilting, crocheting, cooking, fishing, flower gardening and spending time with her family.

Leah is survived by her daughter: Sandra Hemmingsen of Hazleton; son: DuWayne (Peggy) Johnston of Gillette, Wyoming; 3 grandchildren: Lisa (Cecil) Brown, Beth (Aaron) Ganskow & Faith (Braden) Johnson; 5 Great Grandchildren: Tyler, Ashley & Brittney Brown and Tristan & Caitlyn Ganskow; 1 Great Great Granddaughter: Bella Brown; Sister: YuVonne Buckman of Edgewood; Sister-In-Law: Velma Morey of Oelwein and many Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Glenn on January 17, 2003 and son-in-law: Roger Hemmingsen.
