Joan Kathryn Murray, 64, of Altoona, Iowa, entered into her eternal rest on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

Joan Kathryn Hamling was born January 7, 1953, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Matthew and Mary Burke Hamling. The family farmed near Alburnett, Iowa, for six years and then moved to farm near Aurora, Iowa. In 1971, she graduated from Oelwein High School and then attended cosmetology school in Cedar Rapids.

Joan was united in marriage to Robert Murray on August 29, 1981, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, Iowa. To this union were born two sons: Shane and Justin. The family lived in Hazleton, Iowa, until moving to Altoona, Iowa, in 1986. She worked at the Younker’s Distribution Center at Ankeny, Iowa, and then Eye Care in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. She retired in 2014 due to ill health.

Joan was a sweet, caring and loving wife to her husband, mother to her two sons and friend to many.

Preceding Joan in death, were her parents.

Survivors include her loving husband, Robert, of Altoona, and her two devoted sons: Shane of Bondurant, IA and Justin of Altoona; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

On Saturday, March 4, 2017, Visitation will be held at 10 AM in St. Patrick Catholic Church, at Monti, located in rural southern Buchanan County. Her Funeral Mass will at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Casketbearers will be: Pat Meade, Mick Burke, John Burke, Denny Meade, Denny Murray, and Steve Murray. Honorary bearer will be Tim Meade.
