Jesup – Kathy Jean Hersom, 71 years old, of Jesup, IA, died Monday, December 5, 2016 at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, IA.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church, Jesup, IA.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 8th at White Funeral Home, Jesup, and for an hour before services Friday at the church. Memorials will be directed to Autism Speaks, Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy & Cedar Bend Humane Society.

Kathy was born October 2, 1945, in Charles City, IA, the daughter of Claude Hastings and Frances (Smith) Hastings.

Kathy graduated from Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock High School with the class of 1963 and then went on to Mankato State College where she graduated in 1967 with a Bachelors of Science degree in English.

On September 16, 1966, she was united in marriage to Gary Joseph Hersom in Mankato, MN. Kathy was the secretary to the Palo Alto Engineer, before she moved to Jesup with Gary in 1970. She became secretary to the Buchanan County Engineer, and held that position for 31 years before her retirement. She was a member of the Palomino Horse Breeders and other horse associations. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jesup, where she was a Sunday School Teacher.

She enjoyed and loved her family and friends, and was an avid reader, gardener, and loving pet and horse owner.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gary Hersom of Jesup, IA; 2 sons, Matthew (Kristine) Hersom of Newberry, FL, Daniel (fiance Cindy Bloes) Hersom of Chicago, IL; 5 grandchildren, Cole, Samuel, Kaitlyn, Olivia and Aiden; 2 sisters, Joan Peterson of Stratford, IA, Judy (Dan) Schulte of Lake Havasu, AZ; 1 half-sister, Linda Schlitt of Coral Springs, FL; 1 half-brother, Randy (Judy) Hastings of Florida; and 2 step-brothers, Dennis (Mary) Helmers of Charles City, IA, Ronald (Ruth) Helmers of Rochester, MN; She was preceded in death by her parents.

White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA is in charge of arrangements.
