Was born Sept. 28, 1841, in New Glouster, Maine, and passed out on this life Jan.26, 1916, after an illness of more than five months. When 15 years of age he, with his parents, bade farewell to the state of Maine and started West. The state of Wisconsin offered them some inducements and so pausing in the Westward journey settled near the town Genoa.

When the Civil war broke out Mr. Fernald thought he heard a call that suggested to him to forsake the opportunities that might come to him by remaining at home and give himself fully to the service of the country. On Feb. 6, 1862, he joined the Union army, enlisting at Madison, Wis., and for 3 years and 4 months he served as a soldier in the 6th Wisconsin battery. Soon after his discharge from the army, or in 1866, he came to Iowa, settling on a farm in Buchanan county in Fremont township, where he resided until 1904.

On Jan. 6, 1867,m he was united in marriage to Miss Frances Pullis. To this union were born three children - Frederick A., who died in '79; Jessie M., now living in Riverside, Cal., and Karl, who lives on the home farm northeast of Winthrop.

In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Fernald felt that they were reaching the placed in life where they had earned a little rest from the heavy cares of life, so they left the farm and moved to Winthrop, where they enjoyed a well-earned, quiet life and where the deceased spent his last days. Mr. Fernald not only leaves to mourn his loss his wife and children, but also two brothers, one half-brother, two half-sisters and six grandchildren. He was a member of the G.A.R. and will be missed by this order. Mr. Fernald was not given much to talking, choosing rather to think. He was a great reader and spent much of his leisure time in improving his mind by reading. The funeral was held from the M. E. church Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Bear having charge of the service. Interment was made in the Fremont cemetery.
