Was born in Starrucca, Wayne county, Pennsylvania, Feb. 24 1832, the fifth son in a family of nine boys and three girls, of whom only two sisters survive-Mrs. C. M. Shaw, of Starrucca, Penn., and Mrs. B. A. Webber, of Winthrop. in 1855 he was united in marriage to Miss Angeline Vanhoesen in Starrucca and in company with friends they left the old home and settled in Illinois, where they lived for three years. A daughter, now deceased, came to gladden the home here. In 1858 Mr. Sampson came to Iowa and for a year worked at his trade of carpentering before buying a farm and bringing his family to the new home. Since that time, with the exception of ten years, Mr. Sampson was a highly respected citizen and first class mechanic of this town and vicinity. In 1876 he removed to Clear Lake, Iowa, and engaged in building. He erected the first brick house in that place. In 1885 his wife died and after a year he returned to Winthrop and took up farming again. In 1888 he was joined in marriage to Miss Sarah Elizabeth Sherren in Independence and for nearly twenty-six years theirs was a union of happiness, being broken by the summons which came to the husband yesterday morning, after only a short but critical illness of two days.

Mr. Sampson was a workman whose skill was unquestioned, whose services were much sought after and whose life practically, until the day of his death, was blessed with the vigor and spirit that made such work possible. He was unquestionably a Christian, a member of the Winthrop M. E. church since July 1893. It is fitting that the funeral services are to be held from the church where all about we may see evidence of his labor so ungrudgingly given during the renovation last summer. His works shall follow him.

The funeral will be held from the M. E. church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment at Fairview cemetery.
