Madeline Rita Smith, 91, of Independence, Iowa died Thursday, April 9, 2015 at ABCM Rehabilitation Center West Campus in Independence, Iowa.

Rita was born August 2, 1923, in Independence, IA; the daughter of Ernest and Mable (Smith) Buchholz. She was a 1941 graduate of St. John’s Catholic High School in Independence. On September 1 1943 she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Smith at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence. Rita worked for many years as a Nurses Aid at People’s Memorial Hospital, Independence, IA, and also for Independence Produce. She enjoyed spending time admiring nature, dancing, and playing cards with her family & friends.

She is survived by her a son Bill (Jodi) Smith, Bethany, OK, a daughter Ann Holst, Independence, IA, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and two special nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Bill, a son Bob Smith, and two sisters Ellen Marie, and Margaret Buchholz.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church on Monday, April 13, 2015 at 10:30 AM with Rev Don Plamondon Officiating, and Rev. Jim Brokman Concelebrating.

Friends may call on Sunday, April 12, 2015 from 3 PM to 8 PM at The Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA. A Rosary will be held at 3 PM, and a Wake Service will be held at 7 PM on Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory.
