Leone B. Sauer, 96, of Winthrop, Iowa died Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at the Buchanan County Long Term Care Center in Independence, Iowa.

Leone was born on June 3, 1919 in Liberty Township of Buchanan County, Iowa the daughter of Edward R. and Vena R. (Manson) Franck. She was raised in the Quasqueton, IA area attending the Middlefield No. 9 elementary school. At the age of 11, Leone’s mother died and she took on added responsibilities in the home. She graduated as Valedictorian from the Quasqueton High School in 1936. She attended the Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa for one year. On June 8, 1941 she married Vincent L. Sauer. The couple farmed near Quasqueton, IA and she worked as a Teacher’s Aid in the East Buchanan Community Schools in Winthrop, IA for many years. Leone was active in the 4H Club serving as president of Buchanan County 4H receiving various honors, the Quasqueton Garden Club for 74 years serving as president and district officer, judging various events, and the Quasqueton Historical Society. She was also a member of the Union Church, Quasqueton, IA, and taught Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by her son; Tony Lee (Ellen) Sauer, Calmar, IA, five grandchildren, Larry (Tracie) Thom, Harrodsburg, KY, Nancy Thom, Nicholasville, KY, Danielle (Brian) Bakeberg, Cokato, MN, Tim (Kari) Sauer, Waukee, IA, Brian (Breelyn) Sauer, Decorah, IA. Ten great grandchildren: Christopher (Amber) Thom, Michael Thom, Megan (Cole) Dulski, Ali Thom, Madison Bakeberg, Noah, Cate and Ben Sauer, Hattie and Ida Sauer, two great great grandchildren; Harper and Ryker Dulski. A sister; Ester Mae Cox, Peru, IA, and brothers; Keith Franck, Winthrop, IA, and Max Franck of Massachusetts; sisters-in-law, Ruth Franck, Soloma Schantz-Wright, and Joy Saunders, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leone was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 60 years Vincent Sauer on May 9, 2001, a daughter Carlene Thom in 2005, her step-mother, Helen Franck; brothers, Everett, Don, Roger and Ned Franck; sisters, Phyllis Franck, Lois Wolford, and Irene Franck. Also included are Fred and Irnola Cherry, their daughter, Cheryl, Lewis Schantz and Charles Wright.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday, July 27th, 2015 at the Union Church, Quasqueton, IA with Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial will be in the Quasqueton Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 6 PM Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Winthrop, IA and from 9 AM till services Monday at the church.
