Oscar Jensen, 89, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 21, at East Town Manor, Independence, where he had been a resident for two years.
Funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 24, 1:30p.m. in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, with the Rev. James Adix officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Mark Thomas. Burial was in the Floral Hills Cemetery near Hazelton, with grandsons, Brian, Kevin and Jerry Jensen, Gary Albrecht, Ronald Olander and James McLaren as casket bearers. An honorary escort was provided by grandsons, Jeff, Kendall, Lesand, Blayne Jensen, Charles Olander, David McLaren and Frederick Schwarz.
Oscar was born February 26, 1895, in Leland,IL, son of Gunder and Anna (TElefson) Jensen. He attended country schools in Illinois ,and served in the Army during W.W.I. Upon discharge, he returned to Westgate, where on December
29, 1919, he married Josephine Rueckert at St. Peter's at Westgate. The couple moved to the Oran area in 1923, and in 1941, returned to Westgate. In 1944, they moved to the Brandon Rowley area and in 1946, settled on a farm north of Independence until retirement in 1960.He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was also a 56-year member of Bechter-Boies VFW Post 2440.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Josephine who died August 7,1982, two infant children, four brothers and two sisters.
Oscar issurvived by five daughters: Grace Albrecht, Readlyn; Ann Olander, Oelwein; Arlene McLaren, Independence; Jane Meyer, New Albin; Kay Scharz, Davenport; and nine sons: Rollis, Denver; Dale, Elgin; Paul, Independence; John, Winthrop; Robert, Marshalltown; Lee, Mitchellville, MD; Dr. Thomas, New York, NY; Dr.Kenneth, Cedar Rapids; Jim, Independence; 35 grandchildrenand, 29 great grandchildren.
The Mason-Reiff Funeral Chapel of Independence was in charge of arrangements .
