Leon E. Meirick, 68 years old of Jesup, IA, died Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, IA following a long cancer illness.
He was born February 19, 1943, in New Hampton, IA, the son of Bernard Anton Meirick and Sedelia (Swehla) Meirick. Leon graduated from Don Bosco High School, Gilbertville, IA with the class of 1961. On June 20, 1964, he was united in marriage to Grace Versluis in Jesup, IA. They later divorced. He later married Rose Pauline (Elenz) Havlick Meirick, July 25, 1987, in Las Vegas, NV. Leon was retired from John Deere in Waterloo, IA. He was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA and UAW Local 838 in Waterloo, IA.
Leon is survived by his wife, Rose Meirick of Jesup, IA; one son, Roger (Mindy) Meirick, Waterloo, IA; one daughter, Kimberly Porterfield of Waterloo, IA; one step son, Steve Havlik of Jesup, IA; one granddaughter, Hanna Porterfield of Waterloo, IA; two step grandchildren, Jesse (Erika) Havlik and Halsey Havlik of Jesup, IA. His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. – Friday, June 24, 2011, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA, with Fr. Kenneth C. Stecher as Celebrant. Music will be by Monica Bengston, organist; Todd Rohlfsen, soloist and the St. Athansaius Choir. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Donald Wirtz and Ronald Kester. Casket Bearers will be Joe Meirick, Larry Meirick, Jesse Havlik, Kurt Frush, Patrick “Toby” Cummings, John Fox and Randy Cummings. Burial will be at St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, Jesup, IA.
Visitation from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 23rd at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a Parish Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Friday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
