Date: August 23, 2011Melvin C. Fank, 81, of Winthrop, Iowa died Tuesday morning, August 23, 2011 at his home near Winthrop, Iowa.
Melvin was born on November 29, 1929, in Dyersville, Iowa the son of Charles J. and Evelyn E. (Haas) Fank.
In 1932 he moved with his family to Alden, Iowa and in 1934 to Earlville, Iowa where he attended the Earlville Schools. In 1951 the family moved to the Winthrop area. On February 3, 1953 he entered the U.S. Army serving as a Corporal until his discharge on January 28, 1955 at which time he returned to farm with his parents near Winthrop, Iowa. On September 20, 1956 he married Jean Walderbach at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan, Iowa and the couple farmed near Winthrop, IowaHe was a lifetime member of the Winthrop American Legion Post, the Independence V.F.W. Post and the 772nd Military Police Battalion Veterans.
He is survived by five children; John (Dixie) Fank, Walker, Iowa, Mary (Louie) Kacere, Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ron (Polly) Fank, Independence, Iowa, Gary (Michele) Fank, Winthrop, Iowa and Dianne (Robert Slocum) Fank, Aurora, Iowa, and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean Fank in 2009, and a brother Reynold Fank in 2008.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday August 26th, 2011 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Winthrop, Iowa with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating, with burial in the St. Patrick’s’ Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Thursday and from 8 A.M. till 10 A.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Winthrop, Iowa. A rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. Thursday and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
