Leonard Joseph Curry, 73 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, February 21, 2011, at West Village Care Center in Independence.

He was born on January 3, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of George Francis and Bernice Mary (McAreavy) Curry.

He graduated from high school in Jesup, Iowa, with the Class of 1956. On January 31, 1960, he and the former Janet Ann Shonka were married in Independence, Iowa. They later divorced. On November 17, 1978, he and the former Diane Marie Rasmussen were married in Sumner, Iowa. Mr. Curry was a machine operator at the John Deere Engine Works in Waterloo until he retired in 1998. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, the U.A.W. Local #838, and the Independence Bowling Associating. He enjoyed football and baseball, and tinkering with most anything mechanical. And, he was usually involved in a remodeling project at home or at a friend’s house.

Mr. Curry is survived by his wife, Diane, 3 sons, Paul Curry of Dallas, Texas, Keith Curry of Independence, Iowa, and Brad Curry of Cedar Falls, Iowa, 1 daughter, Lenna Curry of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and 3 grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Bernard (Karla) Curry, Don (Debbie) Curry, and Ron (Sharon) Curry, all of Independence, Iowa, and 2 sisters, Lois Hermsen of Independence, Iowa, and Carol (Richard) Woolery of Egan, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, and 1 brother in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 24, 2011, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. Rev. Donald Plamondon will be the Celebrant. Casket Bearers will be Mark Hermsen, Mike Hermsen, Eric Curry, Justin Curry, Brian Bell, and Brennan Bell.

Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Independence.

Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23rd, at the funeral home where a Parish Rosary begins at 3 p.m. and a Vigil Service begins at 7 p.m.

A Memorial Fund has been established for Cedar Valley Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
