Ronald D. Abben, 74, of Independence, Iowa died Sunday morning, January 16, 2011 at West Village Care Center, Independence, Iowa.

Ron was born on August 16, 1936, in Dumont, Iowa the son of Edward and Iva E. (Wickham) Abben.

He was a 1954 graduate of the Bristow High School, Bristow, Iowa and a graduate of the Chicago Broadcasters School, Chicago, Illinois, and later he received an accounting certificate from Hawkeye Tech., Waterloo, IA. He served in the U.S. Army from May 21, 1957 to his discharge on May 20, 1960. On August 10, 1959 he was united in marriage to Janice C. Hites in Belton, Texas. The couple made their home in the Waterloo, Iowa area until 1973 at which time the couple moved to Independence, Iowa. Ron was employed as a Broadcaster with various radio stations in Northeast Iowa and with Rath Packing and Iowa Ham prior to his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Janice, Independence, Iowa, four daughters; Donna Ross, Crescent City, CA., Debra (Kevin) Klotzbach, Independence, IA., Rhonda Zieser, Independence, IA., Christina (John) Moran, Independence, IA., ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a sister; Betty Wubbena, Waterloo, IA., and two brothers; Eldon (Grace) Abben, Evansdale, IA., and Richard Abben, Waterloo, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers; Ivan and Beryl Abben.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence with Rev. Tom Jones officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, and from 9 A.M. to services Wednesday, at the church.

A Military Memorial Service will be held at 7 P.M. Tuesday.
