Betty J. Hills, age 96, of Tripoli, Iowa, died Sunday, December 1, 2019 at the Tripoli Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral services were held at the Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 with Rev. Marilyn J. Sargent officiating. Burial followed the services at the Freemont Cemetery, rural Tripoli.

Betty Jean, daughter of Harry and Gertrude (Gunsalus) Schmidt, was born October 17, 1923 in Tripoli. She was baptized on December 16, 1923 at St.Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Tripoli and later confirmed there. Betty graduated from the Tripoli High School in 1941. On May 31, 1942, she was united in marriage with Bill Hills in Lancaster, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Ron and Linda. Betty worked as a bookkeeper for Kramer and Crittendon, later at F.S. in Tripoli and would complete her working career as a clerk at the Tripoli Liquor Store. She was a faithful member of Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli. Betty enjoyed playing cards, bingo, but her greatest joy came from time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Betty Jean Hills is survived by her two children, Ron (Evelyn) Hills of Elgin, Iowa and Linda (Gary Rieck) of Tripoli; six grandchildren Todd (Marlene) Hills of Waukon, Iowa, Brenda Hills of Buena Vista, Iowa, Kristi (Eric) Shaffer of Robins, Iowa, Reece (Christine) Hills of Erie, Pennsylvania, Jodi Heinemann of Denver, Iowa, and Jill (Charlie) Nuss of Denver, Iowa; eighteen great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one sister Helen Walker of Johnston, Iowa and two sisters-in-law Delores Schmidt of Tripoli, and Bonnie Buck of Hudson, Iowa.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bill who died February 4, 1977; son-in-law Charles "Chuck" Heinemann who died January 9, 2013; four brothers Robert, Dale, Donald, and Richard Schmidt; and three sisters Colleen Claypool, Zatha Skiers, and Naomi Stumme.
