Obituary of Mrs. Joseph L. Smith

Miss Catherine Cook was born in Pennsylvania on April 26, 1847 and at the age of seven years she came to Bremer county, and settled near Horton, near what was afterwords known as the Smith Grove schoolhouse, where she grew to womanhood. On July 2, 1868, she was united in marriage to Mr. Joseph L. Smith of Horton, Iowa. To this union were born five children. Mrs. Nellie Smith and Mr. Loy F. Smith of Plainfield, Iowa, Mrs. Sadie Terry of Waverly, Iowa, Henry A. and Cora preceded her in death. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was one of the early settlers of Bremer county and has witnessed the passing of the Indians and the ox-team. She received her education in the little log schoolhouse in the Smith Grove district.

Mrs. Smith was well and favorably known in this community, where she has always made her home. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, always having a smile and a kind word for all. She will be missed by a host of relatives and friends.

Mrs. Smith passed away from this life August 1, 1924, being 77 years, 3 months, and 5 days of age.

She confessed Christ as her Lord, but was physically unable to be baptized. Her companion was about to turn her in her bed when she said "I am going home: won't you go with me?" She also said her brother was coming for her. This brother had preceded her in death.

A precious one from us is gone
A voice we loved is still
A chair is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled
The boon his love has given.
And tho the body slumbers now
Thy soul is safe in heaven.
