TRIPOLI — Ronald “Ron” William Sommerfelt, 73, of Tripoli, died Thursday, July 25, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. from complications during surgery.

He was born Sept. 23, 1939, in rural Black Hawk County, son of Harold Carl and Dorothy Marie Heidemann Sommerfelt.

He graduated in 1957 from Tripoli High School. He worked for Ambrose Auto, Ray McKeown Construction, and John Deere until he began dairy farming full time in February 1963. Mr. Sommerfelt also worked for Oberheu Construction and John Deere after moving to a smaller, owned farm in Chickasaw County until returning to the farm southwest of Tripoli. He was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church - Crane Creek, where he served on church council several times, was a church trustee and was on the church cemetery committee. He also served on an advisory board for Swiss Valley Farms.

Survived by: his wife of nearly 50 years, Carolyn Sommerfelt of Tripoli; three sons, Lelann (Machelle) of rural Jesup, Darrin (Renee) of Landstuhl, Germany, and Derrek of rural Tripoli; a daughter, Donell (Dave) Kelling of Waverly; three grandsons, Alex Kelling, Joshua and Philip Sommerfelt; a brother, Loren (Sharon) Sommerfelt of rural Sumner; a sister, Eileen (Jerry) Jaschen of Dallas Center; and a brother-in-law, Robert (Sharon) Foelske of Janesville.

Preceded in death by: his parents; and his mother- and father-in-law.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church – Crane Creek, rural Tripoli, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, and for an hour before the service Wednesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the family, St. John’s Lutheran – Crane Creek, or American Cancer Hope Lodge in Rochester, Minn.

Ron enjoyed maintaining and working with his vintage farm equipment, his time spent dairy and hog farming, spending time with family and visiting with friends and neighbors.
