At the age of 17 in 1895, he came to the United States, settling in this community. He worked as a farm hand during his early years here.

On Feb. 3, 1903, he was united in marriage to Wilhelmina Block. She preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1929.

Mr. Borcherding farmed northwest of Sumner until retiring in 1949 when he moved to Sumner, making his home with the Albrechts.

Surviving are five sons, Werner of Fredericksburg, Arthur, Emil, Erwin and Leslie, all of Sumner; three daughters, Elsie, Mrs. Ralph Albrecht of Sumner; Emilda, Mrs. Clarence Niewoehner of Sumner, and Edna, Mrs. Herbert Kempin of Waterloo; 20 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Alfred, March 17, 1969; two brothers, Fred and Ernest, and two sisters, Wilhelmina and Lena.
