William R. Lang, 91, died at Hillcrest
William R. "Bill" Lang, 91, longtime Sumner area farm owner-manager, died Sunday, May 25, at 10:40 a.m. at Hillcrest Home, Sumner. His death was attributed to pneumonia and complication incident to advanced age.

Mr. Lang had been a resident of Hillcrest Home since Dec. 17, 1974.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the Emerson-Milnes Funeral Home with Rev. George McMullen, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sumner, officiating. Burial was in the Zion cemetery northwest of Sumner.

William R. Lang was born Mar. 16, 1884 in Clayton County, Iowa, the son of John and Hedwig Atzler Lang. He came to the Sumner area with his parents as a small child and lived the remainder of his life in this community.

He attended public schools of Bremer County. After his parents moved into town he resided with them at the residence on West First Street, the first place west of the bridge on the north side of the street. He continued to reside there with his brother, John, until his brother's death, Nov. 20, 1962. Since that time, he has made his home in his apartment building at the corner of First and Carpenter Streets.

Mr. Lang, one of Sumner's eldest residents at the time of his death, was well-known in the community. He was a familiar figure daily on Sumner's main street and enjoyed visiting with anyone who had the time and inclination to discuss anything from the weather to politics.

Mr. Lang is the last member of a family of exceptional longevity. His father, John, Sr., was 98 at the time of his death and many residents will remember him walking to the business district from their home on West First Street, with his long beard flowing, seemingly right up to the day of his death.

His mother was also over 90 at the time of her death.

His brother, Frank, died at the age of 96 and his sister, Mary at 94.

His sisters, Anna and Tillie, were reportedly over 90 when they died although the exact age is not available.

His brother, John, died at the age of 76 and his brother, Henry died in his youth, stricken with one of the fatal diseases of the day at age 16 or 17.
