Jan Lantow, 79, Enters Into Rest Saturday Night
Resident of Community 55 Years Succumbs to Heart Trouble
John Lantow, 79, a resident of this community for 55 years, passed to his reward Saturday night at 11 o'clock after an illness of five weeks.
Mr Lantow took up residence in this community in 1884, having emigrated from Germany. For the first three years he served as a farm laborer. After his marriage he rented a farm and after four years purchased a farm four miles east of Sumner. Four years later he and his wife moved to a farm north of Sumner. In 1904 he purchased a farm south of Sumner, remaining there until 1915 when they retired and moved to Sumner.
John Carl Frederick Martin Lantow, the oldest son of the family of Christian Lantow and Marie Schult, was born at Altendorf, Germany, Jan 2, 1860. He was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Easter time, 1874.
At the age of 18 years, he entered military training, but his father died and after 10 weeks he was released from service to help support the family. Six years later he came to America.
On Nov. 25, 1887, he was united in marriage with Ernestine Scheel with whom he lived in happy union until death. Their home was blessed with 10 children, seven sons and three daughters, of whom one daughter died in 1902 at the age of 10 years.
During the World War he was depressed in spirit and suffered a nervous condition, from which he rallied, however, and regained his former health. Five weeks before his death he was stricken with heart trouble and complications. He was a faithful member of St John's Lutheran church and a regular attendant at divine services.
Funeral services were held at St John's Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon with Rev. C J Mardorf officiating. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery.
His death is mourned by his wife; his children, Herman of Nashua, Emil and John of Sumner, Vern of Denver, Colo, Emma - Mrs August Wilkening of Readlyn, Olinda - Mrs Ben Cottrill of Clear Lake, Ernest of Rockford, Ill, Alfred of Rockton, Il and Martin of Austin, Minn, 13 grandchildren; one brother, Rev. Fred Lantow of Renwick and a host of friends.
