Fred G. Clark, a member of the firm of Reith & Clark, proprietors of a large barber shop, lunch counter and billiard hall in Waverly, was born in Floyd, Floyd county, Iowa, in November, 1861. He is a son of George D. and Maria (Mallory) Clark, natives of New York state. The parernal grandfather moved to Ohio at an early date and spent the remainder of his life there. The maternal grandfather was a pioneer in Wisconsin and passed away in that state. After George D. Clark grew to manhood he moved to Iowa, settling in Floyd, Floyd county, where he engaged in contracting and building. He later turned his attention to farming and became a prosperous and representative agriculturist.

Fred G. Clark is the second in a family of five children. He acquired his education in the public schools and in 1883 moved to Waverly, where he has since resided. He opened a barber shop here and after a short time became associated in the business with his brother, William W. Clark, the partner operating a large billiard hall in connection with the original establishment. Mr. Clark of this review eventually sold his interests and after some time formed a partnership with Carl Reith. They organized the firm of Reith & Clark and have since conducted a four-chair barber shop, a lunch counter and a six-table billiard room. All branches of their enterpise are flourishing, for both are energetic, farsighted and progressive business men and carry forward to successful completion whatever they undertake.

In February, 1886, Mr. Clark was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Olds, a daughter of J.P. Olds, an early settler in Bremer county. Mr. and Mrs. Clark have three children. The oldest, James George, after graduating from the Waverly high school, entered the State University, where he studied law. He received his degree in 1910 and is now junior partner in the firm of Williams & Clark, in Waterloo. Romaine, also a graduate in law from the State University, is now connected with the firm of Feely & Feely, of Waterloo. Fred G. has graduated from the Waverly high school and entered Iowa State University in the fall of 1913. All are fond of outdoor sports, James and Romaine being enthustiastic fishermen and Fred G. a successful hunter. Mr. Clark is justly proud of his sons, whom he has reared to be useful citizens and whose records will undobtedly be an added credit to his name.

Mr. Clark has served for five successive terms as a member of the city council, representing the first ward, where he has always made his home. He is a successful and able business man, holding the esteem of his business associates, while in matters of citizenship he is at all times helpful and progressive, giving his aid and influence to many measures for the public good.
