Thomas M. Husband is engaged in general farming and stockraising upon a portion of the farm upon which he was born May 16, 1873. He is a son of John and Ann (Meldrum) Husband, natives of Scotland, the father born January 18, 1832, and the mother February 19th of the same year. Their marriage occurred in Scotland in 1856 and immediately afterward they came to the United States, settling on a farm of one hundred and forty acres in Dayton township, this county, in pioneer times. For many years thereafter the father cultivated and developed his holdings, becoming one of the successful and prosperous agriculturists of this locality. He retired in 1897 and moved into Sumner, where his death occurred September 24, 1900. His wife survives him and makes her home with her daughter in Sumner. They were among the early settlers in Bremer county and Mrs. Husband relates many interesting incidents of pioneer times. She and her husband became the parents of five children: David, who lives on a portion of the homestead; Janette, the wife of S.L. Hathaway; Anna, who married Wesley Lease, of Sumner; Jennie, the wife of F.D. Worden, also of Sumner; and Thomas M. of this review.

The last named was reared upon his father's farm and acquired his education in the district schools. He has never left the homesead, of which he now owns one hundred and thirty-two and a half acres. Upon this he has made extensive improvements, having erected a new barn, remodeled the house and installed modern machinery. He engages in general farming and stock-raising and in both branches of his activities is meeting with gratifying and well deserved success.

Mr. Husband married Miss Berlinda Woodard, who was born in Grundy county, Missouri, a daughter of William and Louisa (Grabast) Woodard, natives of Indiana and pioneers of Buchanan county, Iowa. The father has passed away but his wife survives him and makes her home in Independence. Mr. and Mrs. Husband have three children: Hazel Janette, born January 5, 1897; Gladys Marie, October 7, 1902; and Glen Ross, March 7, 1904.

Mr. Husband is a member of the Presbyterian church and gives his political allegiance to the republican party. He is well and favorably known throughout his native county and has become one of its substantial and prosperous men, his success being entirely due to his industry, perseverance and good management.
