William F. Meyerhoff, a well known carpenter and contractor of Readlyn, is a native son of Maxfield township and a representative of one of the best known families here. He was born February 25, 1878, his parents being Christian H. and Mary (Niedert) Meyerhoff, the former a native of Schaumburg-Lippe, Germany, born October 1, 1843, and the latter of Cook county, Illinois, born May 15, 1850. The father is a veteran of the Civil war, having enlisted in 1864 in Company C, One hundred and Forty-first Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving six months. In 1870 he moved to Maxfield township, this state, and has since remained a resident of this locality. He survives his wife, who died April 9, 1896. In their family were eleven children: Mrs. Fred Piehl, residing in Franklin township; Mrs. Chris Schweer, of Fremont township; Edward C., of Maxfield township; Mrs. Herman Schweer, also of Maxfield township; Arthur, deceased; Mrs. Gustave Hahn, of Maxfield township; and Mrs. William Huebner, Oscar and Walter, all residing in Maxfield township. After the death of his wife Mr. Meyerhoff married Mrs. Dorothea (Schroeder) Hahn, of Frederika township, the widow of Fred Hahn, by whom she had five children. There were no children by the second marriage.

William F. Meyerhoff was reared at home and following the completion of his education turned his attention to farming. At this occupation he engaged until 1895 and then learned the carpenter's trade, with which he has since been identified. For the past twelve years he has been one of the leading carpenters and contractors in Readlyn and controls a large and constantly increasing patronage, for his work is of high quality and his business methods at all times straightforward and honorable. He owns a comfortable home in Readlyn and forty acres of valuable land on section 29, Franklin township.

On the 2d of October, 1907, Mr. Meyerhoff was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Trost, who was born in Benton county, September 1, 1884. In 1896 she went with her parents to Blackhawk county and there attended public school. She is a daughter of Fred and Anna (Doll) Trost, natives of Germany and now residents of Readlyn. In their family were eight children: Harry, a resident of Blackhawk county; Mrs. Meyerhoff, wife of the subject of this review; Fred, of Waterloo; Mrs. Anna Rinderknecht, deceased; Mrs. Ella Meyerhoff, of Maxfield township; Clara and May, deceased; and John of Readlyn. Mr. and Mrs. Meyerhoff have become the parents of a son, Arnold, born November 11, 1908.

Mr. Meyerhoff is a member of St. Paul's German Evangelical Lutheran church and he gives his political allegiance to the republican party. He is interested in everything pertaining to the welfare of his native county, being in sympathy with movements for its material, political, intellectual and moral progress.
