Among those who contributed in substantial measure to the agricultural development of Bremer county was numbered Hugh Hazlitt, who became connected with farming interests here in 1860, continuing active in the operation of his farm until his death in 1900. He lived to a ripe old age, winning the respect and confidence of his fellowmen by reason of an upright and honorable life that conformed to the highest and truest standards. He was born in County Antrim, Ireland, and is of Scotch parentage, a complete genealogical record of his family appearing on another page of this work in connection with the sketch of John M. Hazlitt.

Hugh Hazlitt came to America with his parents in 1842 and settled at Utica, New York. He married in 1849 and in 1854 moved with his wife to Stephenson county, Illinois, where he engaged in farming for six years. In the spring of 1860 they moved to Bremer county and Mr. Hazlitt bought forty acres of government land on section 24, Fremont township. He later added to his holdings from time to time, owning finally two hundred acres. When this came into his possession it was unimproved and covered with a dense growth of timber. With characteristic energy Mr. Hazlitt developed and cultivated this property, making it in time a valuable and productive farm.

In 1849 Mr. Hazlitt married Miss Eliza Jane Young, who was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1830. She is now the only survivor of those who settled in Fremont township before the Civil war. She makes her home on the old farm and although eighty-three years of age, is still hale and hearty and contemplates a trip alone to North Dakota in the near future in order to visit her youngest son. Mr. and Mrs. Hazlitt became the parents of five children of whom three survive: James Young, mayor of Waverly, Iowa; William G., of Waterloo, and Louis C., who makes his home in North Dakota. John H. and Ellen are both deceased.

Hugh Hazlitt was a staunch democrat in his political beliefs and interested in public affairs, serving with credit and ability in various township offices. He was honorable, true and upright in every relation of life and
therefore enjoyed the esteem and confidence of all who came in contact with him.
