A spirit of enterprise and progress actuates Henry W. Everding in all that he does and has brought him today to a position among the leading business men of Readlyn, where since 1911 he has conducted a restaurant. He was born in Maxfield township, this county, November 9, 1876, and is a son of Henry and Sophia (Ties) Everding, natives of Germany, the former born November 7, 1847. The father arrived in Denver, Iowa, in 1866 and there worked for a number of years as a farm hand. Eventually he purchased a farm in Maxfield township and his death there occurred on March 21, 1901. His wife survives him and resides upon the homestead. Eleven children were born to their union: Mrs. Elizabeth Schroeder, residing near Tripoli; Henry W., of this review; Christopher, residing in Maxfield township; John, of Readlyn; William and Mrs. Sophia Hendricks, both of Maxfield township; Herman and Ernest, residing with their mother; Clara, who died in infancy; and Carl and Louis, at home.

Henry W. Everding is in all essential respects a self-made man for from the early age of fourteen he has not only gained his own livelihood but has also contributed to the support of his parents. He acquired his education in the German parochial schools of Maxfield township and then learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed for seventeen years thereafter. In April, 1911, he engaged in the restaurant business in Readlyn and had just become well established when a fire broke out in the business portion of the city and he lost all of his possessions. With characteristic energy, however, he reopened his establishment, which he has since conducted. In addition to the restaurant business he deals also in confectionery, cigars and tobacco and has built up a large and representative patronage, for he is known as an honorable and straightforward business man whose integrity is beyond question.

On the 25th of December, 1907, Mr. Everding was united in marriage to Miss Paulina Lussenhop, who was born at Cedar Falls, Iowa, September 9, 1877, a daughter of William and Catherine (Wild) Lussenhop, natives of Germany, the former born September 20, 1850 and the latter June 8, 1851. The mother died in Maxfield township March 28, 1906, and is survived by her husband, who makes his home in Readlyn. In their family were nine children: Mrs. Sophia Jarrod, who was born in Grundy county, Iowa, and who now resides in Des Moines; Mrs. Everding, wife of the subject of this review; William, of Readlyn; Mrs. Caroline Mason, of Waterloo, Iowa; Rosa, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; George and Arthur, both of whom reside in Readlyn; and Adolph and Hilda, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Everding have become the parents of a son, Melvin W.

Mr. Everding is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Maxfield township and gives his political allegiance to the democratic party. He is interested in the growth of Bremer county and his residence here, dating from his birth to the present time, has made him widely and favorably known. He deserves great credit for what he has accomplished, for he started out in life without resources and has worked his own way steadily upward to success.
