Frederick L. Bierie, engaged in the furniture and undertaking business in Readlyn, was born in Franklin township, this county, December 14, 1888. He is a son of Barnhart and Theressa (Fethketter) Bierie, the former a native of Bremer county, born May 8, 1855, and the latter of Dubuque county, born April 18, 1861. The parents were among the early settlers in Franklin township, where the father engaged in farming until his death. His wife survives him and makes her home in that locality. Five sons were born to their union: William, a resident of Fairbank, Iowa; Barnhart, of Dubuque; Frederick L., of this review; John, who makes his home in Fredericksburg; and Harold, of Franklin township.

Frederick L. Bierie was reared in Franklin township and acquired his early education in the public schools, afterward attending the Oelwein Business College. When he began his independent career he turned his attention to farming and he followed this occupation until 1908, when he became manager of a furniture store in Readlyn. On the 1st of September, 1911, he engaged in this business for himself, conducting also an undertaking department. He carries a complete line of undertaker's supplies and also furniture, including sewing machines and pianos, and he controls a large and representative patronage.

On the 22d of October, 1912, Mr. Bierie was untied in marriage to Miss Irene Clabby, who was born in Masonville, Iowa, and grew to womanhood there. She acquired her education in the public schools and afterward taught in Buchanan and Bremer counties for six years. She is a daughter of Thomas Clabby, a native of Ireland, now residing on a farm near Masonville. In this family were eight children, James, John, Frank, Thomas, Irene, Florence, Mary and Genevieve. Mr. and Mrs. Bierie have become the parents of a son, Elwin Lewis, born in Readlyn, August 27, 1913. Mr. Bierie gives his political allegiance to the democratic party and is interested in everything that pertains to the welfare and growth of the community. He is one of the most progressive and active merchants in Readlyn and is recognized as such in business circles, where he is held in high respect and esteem.
