He came west to this state in May, 1856, settling in Bremer county, but three years later returned to New York, there remaining for a period of three years. In October, 1863, he returned to Bremer county and purchased a farm of one hundred and seven acres on section 26, Jackson township, on which he has resided to the present time and the boundaries of which he has extended until it now embraces one hundred and forty acres, ninety acres thereof being in a high state of cultivation. In connection with the production of cereals he has devoted considerable attention to livestock, meeting with well merited success in both branches of his business. He likewise owns two hundred and forty acres of timber land in Dent county, Missouri, and has long been numbered among the substantial and representative citizens of his community.

In 1867 Mr. Loveland was united in marriage to Miss Jenny St.John, who was born at Franklinville, New York, in 1851, her parents being James and Adaline (Curtis) St.John, of English descent. The father was a native of Saratoga Springs, New York, while the mother's birth occurred at Franklinville, that state. Their marriage was celebrated in the Empire state, where James St.John worked as a tanner until 1856, when he came west to Bremer county, Iowa. Some years later he purchased land in Jackson township and there made his home until called to his final rest in 1878. His wife, surviving him for a quarter of a century, passed away in 1903. Mrs. Loveland is a representative of the ninth generation of the St.John family in this country, the first representatives of the name in the United States being her great-grandparents who came from England in 1631 and settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts. James St.John, the great-grandfather of Mrs. Loveland, served in the Revolution was a member of Colonel Willett's New York regiment. Unto James and Adaline (Curtis) St.John were born six children, as follows: Mrs. C.K. Thompson, of Maynard, Minnesota; Mary, a resident of Waterloo, Iowa; Fay, at home; Halbert, who is also under the parental roof; and Lucy, a school teacher. The first five named have also followed the profession of teaching.

Mr. Loveland is a staunch republican in his political views but has never sought nor desired the emoluments of office. The religious faith of the family is that of the Methodist Episcopal church, and Mrs. Loveland and two of her daughters belong to the Daughters of the American Revolution. They enjoy an extensive and favorable acquaintance throughout the community and the hospitality of the best homes is cordially extended them.
