Albert Webb, a well known and venerable citizen of Janesville, is now enjoying retirement in the evening of a wisely spent, useful and honorable life. He first took up his abode in Bremer county in 1856 and from this state enlisted for service in the Civil war. His birth occurred in Ohio on the 27th of September, 1830, his parents being Isaac and Emeline Webb, the former a native of Utica, New York, and the latter of Connecticut. They removed to Ohio in early life and were married in that state, Mr. Webb there following farming until he passed away at the age of seventy-two. His wife was sixty-nine years old when called to her final rest. Their children were three in number, as follows: Albert, of this review; Wilfred, whose demise occurred in Ohio; and Angeline, who died in that state at the age of four years.

Albert Webb obtained his education in the schools of his native state and remained under the parental roof until twenty-six years of age, or until 1856, when he came to Iowa, settled in Bremer county and here later purchased land. Soon afterward he disposed of his property and was then employed as clerk in a mercantile store at Janesville until 1858, when he embarked in business as a general merchant on his own account, conducting an establishment in Janesville until October 22, 1862. On that date he enlisted for service in the Union army as a member of Company B, Fourteenth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, remaining with that command for two years. He spent six months in work with the commissary department at Davenport and was afterward sent to Memphis, starting thence on the Red River expedition under Quartermaster Buel. He was honorably discharged on the 22nd of October, 1864, and returned to Janesville in that year and remained here until 1871, after which he conducted a general store in Waterloo for a number of years. Subsequently, in 1883, he went to Huron, South Dakota, and there conducted business as a dealer in groceries and coal in association with his son Frank for a period of twenty-six years. After the death of his son he sold his interests in that connection and for a time carried on a dairy business. Subsequently he returned to Iowa and lived retired at Cherokee until 1910, when he took up his abode in Janesville, which has remained his home continuously since. Mr. Webb still owns a quarter section of land in South Dakota and also a handsome residence in Janesville. He is a stockholder in the Janesville Savings Bank and is widely recognized as one of the substantial and respected citizens of the community.

In 1858 Mr. Webb was joined in wedlock to Miss Martha E. Loveland, a native of New York and a daughter of Remembrance and Lucinda (Shaw) Loveland, who were born in Vermont and Massachusetts respectively. The father passed away in the Empire state in 1844, while the mother's demise there occurred two decades later. The grandfather of Mrs. Webb participated in the Revolutionary war, nor is this the only military record in her family as her grandfather fought in the War of 1812 and both her husband and father took part in the Civil war. She is a Daughter of the American Revolution.

Unto Mr. and Mrs. Loveland were born nine children, three of whom are still living, namely: Mrs. Martha E. Webb; Joel, who is a resident of Janesville, Iowa; and Cheney, also of this county.

Mrs. and Mrs. Webb became the parents of six children, as follows: Frank, who passed away at Huron, South Dakota, in 1908, while there engaged in business with his father and who left a wife to mourn his loss; one who died in infancy; Carrie E., Wilbur and Irene, all of whom are deceased; and Morell A., who is married and acts as manager of a grocery establishment in Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Mr. Webb gives his political allegiance to the republican party but has never sought nor desired office as a reward for his fealty. Both he and his wife are Presbyterians in religious faith, and the latter belongs to the Ladies' Relief Corps of Janesville. He has now passed the eighty-third milestone on life's journey, and his career has ever been such that he can look back over the past without regret and forward to the future without fear.
