One of the earliest settlers in Bremer county is Daniel R. Hatch, whose residence here dates from 1856. Since that time he has made his home continuously upon his farm in Sumner township and has made many valuable contributions to the advancement and development of the region. He was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, on the 24th of February, 1829, and he grew to manhood in that locality. In 1856, he came overland to Bremer county, Iowa, and bought eighty acres of land in Sumner township, one mile west of the present site of the town of Sumner. This was an unimproved tract, but with characteristic energy Mr. Hatch broke the soil and began the work of cultivation, which he carried forward steadily year by year, following always the most progressive and practical methods and making his farm one of the finest in this locality. He still makes his home upon it, although he is living practically retired.

In Bremer county Mr. Hatch wa united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Davis, who was born in New Hampshire, March 20, 1839. They became the parents of three children: D.D., a farmer of Sumner township, of whom further mention appears elsewhere in this work; Mary A., who lives at home; and A.M., operating his father's farm. Mr. Hatch is numbered among the oldest settlers in Bremer county and at the course of his long period of residence here has gained a high place in the esteem and regard of his neighbors, who recognized him as a man of tried intergrity and worth and of unblemished personal character.
