Among the well known merchants of Waverly, Bremer county, Iowa, Charles P. Neubauer, who since 1903 has been established in business here and now enjoys an extensive and profitable trade as custom tailor as well as purveyor of ready made clothing and men's furnishings. A native of Ontario, Canada, he was born in Guelph, April 29, 1869, a son of Charles F. Neubauer, who was born in Germany. the father came to Ontario as a young man and located on a farm near Guelph, becoming one of the successful agriculturists of that section, there passing his entire life. He died in 1913, at the age of eighty years, and his wife reached the age of seventy.

Charles P. Neubauer was the seventh in order of birth in a family of eleven children. He spent his school days in Ontario, having the advantage of the excellent public-school system of that province. Continuing on the homestead until eighteen years of age, he then learned the tailoring trade and after completing his apprenticeship went to Toronto, where he remained for four years. Thence he made his way to New York city, where for two years he continued along the same line, being employed by the leading tailors of that metropolis. Leaving the east, he removed to Chicago, where he remained for a similar period of time, coming from there to Waverly in 1900. Upon his arrival in this city he became a cutter for L. Hiller and so continued for two years, opening at the end of that period an establishment of his own in partnership with James E. Scully under the firm name of Scully & Neubauer, their location being Springville, Iowa. That was in 1902, but on March 1, 1903, they removed the business to Waverly, establishing the business of which Mr. Neubauer is yet the head. Mr. Scully continued as his partner until 1912, when, owing to poor health, he retired from the firm. Mr. Neubauer is continuing the business with most gratifying success and as the years have passed has built up a large custom trade. From the beginning he also carried a complete line of ready made clothing and men's furnishings. The store occupies a space of twenty-five by eighty feet, the building being two stories in height. The work shop is situated upstairs and there first-class workmen turn out the highest grade of work. The store is modernly equipped and a large stock of clothing and furnishings is carried. Mr. Neubauer is not only an expert in his line but his taste as regards men's apparel is practically infallible and it is, therefore, but natural that his business has assumed such extensive proportions. Modern and progressive ideas are brought to realization in his business and punctuality and careful execution of detail are his watchwords. On one side of the store the long line of glass showcases running the entire length of the establishment houses the finer grades of his stock. Mr. Neubauer also carries a complete line of fur coats and fur linings, giving his customers opportunity to select from the popular qualities up to the most expensive. His customers are always treated with the utmost courtesy and he considers no effort too great to comply with their wishes and assure him of their satisfaction.

On November 25, 1902, Mr. Neubauer was united in marriage to Miss Bertha C. Linow, of Bremer county, and they have one daughter, Gladys. Mr. Neubauer is a member of the Catholic church, of which he is a devout communicant. He is deeply interested in the welfare and progress of his city and county and can ever be found in the ranks of those who give their support to such enterprises as make for growth and expansion. Fraternally he is a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. He has become one of the substantial men of Waverly, where he is highly respected not only in business circles, in which his word is as good as his bond, but also by the general public, who find in him a pleasing, genial gentleman and one whose qualities of character merit by the highest commendation.
