Since 1885, Wilhelm Gaede has lived upon his farm of eighty acres on section 12, Sumner township, and in its development has surrounded himself with an enviable degree of prosperity. He was born in Germany, December 4, 1856, and is a son of John Gaede, who emigrated to America in 1868, settling in Cook county, Illinois. Four years later the father moved to Bremer county, Iowa, locating on a farm in Dayton township, where he continued to reside until his death, which occurred when he was seventy-four years of age. His wife, who was in her maidenhood Miss Elizabeth Welbrandt, died in Bremer county at the age of fifty.

Wilhelm Gaede was reared upon his father's farm and when he was still a young man assisted with its operation. In 1883 he bought eighty acres on section 12, Sumner township, and since that time has engaged in general farming upon this place. He has rebuilt all of the buildings and erected a comfortable house, making the property well improved and productive.

In 1883 Mr. Gaede married Miss Ernestine Pipers, a native of Germany and a daughter of Michael Pipers, who came to America when his daughter was nineteen years of age, afterward engaging in farming in LeRoy township, this county, until his death. His wife survives him and makes her home in LeRoy township. Mr. and Mrs. Gaede have become the parents of seven children: Herman, of South Dakota; Silva, of Davenport, Iowa; Elizabeth, the wife of John Babbit; August, at home; William, a traveling salesman with headquarters in Pennsylvania; Emma of Waverly; and Ernest, at home. Mr. Gaede is a member of the Lutheran church and a democrat in his political beliefs. He is recognized as an honest and industrious farmer and he holds the high regard and confidence of all who know him.
