J.L. Schildbach, who for the past thirty years has been manager of the elevator at Sumner now owned by Webster Brothers, of Waucoma, was born in Jefferson county, Wisconsin, January 2, 1857, a son of John Schildbach, deceased, who was for many years a farmer in Germany.

J.L. Schildbach acquired his education in the public schools of Jefferson county and when he was eighteen years of age moved to Bremer county, where he engaged in farm labor for three years, working in the employ of his brother-in-law. He afterward secured a position with J.A. Haag and when he resigned this was for eight years on a farm owned by S.F. Cass. During all of that time, he lived at Sumner. He then took charge of the elevator at Sumner owned by his employer, and he was retained as manager after the enterprise was sold to Webster Brothers, of Waucoma. For the past thrity years he has held this responsible position and has been found always faithful, conscientious and reliable. In the course of time he has acquired valuable property interest and now owns one hundred and twenty acres of land in Sumner township which was rented to one tenant for nineteen years and then to its present occupant. He owns also a comfortable residence in town and fifteen acres of valuable farming land adjoining.

In Bremer county Mr. Schildbach married Miss Ida Haag, a daughter of J.A. Haag, an early settler in this section of the state. They have become the parents of three children, Alma, Elkla and Ernest, all at home. Mr. Schildbach is a member of the Evangelical church and is a republican in his political beliefs. He served for thirteen years on the school board of Sumner and was for six years a member of the town council, proving a capable and public-spirited official. During the long period of his residence in Sumner he has firmly established himself in the regard and confidence of his fellow citizens by reason of a life which has been upright and honorable in all its relations.
