Joyce Lonergan, 71, died January 17, 2006 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Following the service, her body will be cremated and her cremains will be buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone at a later date.

Joyce was born March 5, 1934, near Belle Plaine, the daughter of Robert and Fannie (Duda) Jacobi. Her mother married Charles "Peck" Hutchinson and the family moved to Boone in 1947. Joyce married Paul Lonergan on August 12, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. She graduated from Boone High School in 1952 and took numerous classes at DMACC during her life.

She served in the Iowa House of Representatives for 12 years from 1974 to 1986. From 1986 to 1998, she was Boone County Recorder. She was active in Boone County Democractic politics for many years and worked on many congresstional and political campaigns. The highlight of her political career, was lunch at the White House with President Jimmy Carter in 1980. She received the Boone County Democrats Everett Brown Award in 2002 and won the Women Helping Women Award from Soropimists International in 1977.

She was preceded in death by her father; stepfather, "Peck" Hutchinson; and her husband, Paul Lonergan.

She is survived by two sons, Patrick (Terri) Lonergan of Whichita, KS and Peter (Nancy) Lonergan of Boone; two daughters, Kathleen Lonergan and Staci Newberg, both of Boone; her mother, Fannie Hutchinson of Boone; a brother, R. Dean Jacobi of Polk City; a sister, Joanne (Ted)Tedesco of Ames; three step-sisters, Delores (Jim)Davis and Joyce Kennedy all of Yuma, AZ, and JoEllen (Don) Howard of Boone; a brother-in-law, Don (Charlotte) Lonergan of Boone and a sister-in-law, Mary Pike of Ogden; five grandchildren Heather (Michael) Beck of Rusk, Texas, Hannah Lonergan of Witchita, KS, Carley and Mallory Lonergan of Boone and Taylor Newberg of Boone.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart School Foundation or the Children's Room of the Ericson Public Library in Boone.

Scroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone is in charge of arrangements.
