“Alexander Abercrombie died in Des Moines Saturday, the 2nd of August 1890 in the 91st year of his age. He was born in Virginia in 1799 and came to Boone County in 1851, settling near Pilot Mound. He had a large family of respected sons and daughters, most of them with their mother preceding the father to the spirit land. He retained all his faculties until the very last. Many were his deeds of charity to the stranger and none left his house in want. The funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Lewis Doran, were held in the M.E. Church, Pilot Mound, Monday and attended by all the old settlers in the community. Relatives were present from Des Moines and Milwaukee. His remains were buried by the side of the companion of his youth in the Linn Cemetery near Pilot Mound.”

“Alexander Abercrombie died at his daughter Mrs. S. Godrey’s home at 717 Mulberry Street, Des Moines. Age: 92 years. The funeral services were at Pilot Mound, Iowa, on Monday, August 4th. He died at 2 p.m. on August 2nd, leaving two daughters, Mrs. S. Godrey of DesMoines, and another one at Osage City, Kansas; and a son in Ottumwa. His grandson, C.A. Abercrombie of the Pacific Express Co., will take the remains to Pilot Mound Monday morning for interment.” [Note: the “son at Ottumwa” was Charles.]
