Maria Elizabeth Happel Kammin, the daughter of George and Katharina (Rinderknecht) Happel, was born Dec. 31, 1871, near Atkins, Iowa. Early in youth she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in which she had been a faithful believer all her life.
On June 29, 1893, she was united in marriage to William Kammin and to this union four children were born. Mrs. Kammin spent her childhood days near Cedar Rapids. After her marriage, she moved to Boone County and for the past 19 years had made her home with her son, George, of Blue Island, Ill. Her husband and one daughter preceded her in death.
For the past several months she had been ailing. An operation was suggested as a remedy and she willingly consented to it. However, although things seemed favorable at first, pneumonia developed and she passed away March 30, 1948, at St. Francis Hospital in Blue Island at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 30 days.
Surviving are her children, George of Blue Island, Ill., Harold of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Fred (Rose) Meyer of Stratford, Ia.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and also three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Christina) Stoll of Boone, Mrs. Elizabeth Michel of Stratford and Mrs. Fred Schroeder of Latimer; four brothers, John Happel of Canada, Theodore Happel of Latimer, Paul Happel of Van Horn and Walter Happel of Cedar Rapids; also two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rose Happel of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Hattie Happel of Bozeman, Montana.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 3, at 1:45 p.m. from the Schroeder Funeral Home and at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, near Mackey, with the Rev. H.M. Zagel officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews, Harlan Meyer, Reuben Meyer, Lawrence Happel, Edward Sturtz, Albert Stoll and Richard Happel. Burial was in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery adjoining the church.
