Joyce Elaine Thomas, age 79, of 1901 East 1st Street, died May 27, 2009, at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral services are Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Eric Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Mineral Ridge Cemetery in Ridgeport.
Joyce was born in Fraser on August 17, 1929, the daughter of German and Amy (Ridpath) Bowman. On January 9, 1954, Joyce married Edward Thomas in Grant City, Missouri. In earlier years, Joyce worked in the laundry department of the Eastern Star Masonic Home. She later worked as a custodian at Iowa State University retiring June 28, 1991. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Foster Grandparent Program. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing solitaire, and watching Golden Girls and Little House on the Prairie on television.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, two brothers, and two grandchildren. Joyce is survived by two sons, Gary Thomas and Steve Thomas, both of Boone; two daughters, Katherine O'Brian and husband Charles of Mountain Home, Arkansas and Vicky Burke of Boone; four grandchildren: Robert Burke and wife Tracy of Ames, Tony O'Brian and wife, Angela of Dolph, Arkansas, Becky Burke of Boone, and Jessica Thomas of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three great grandchildren: Amber O'Brian of Dolph, Arkansas and Cole and Cameron Burke, both of Ames; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Friday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday at the Church from 9:00 a.m. to service time.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
