Paul Ira Long, 94, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa. In agreement with Paul's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service honoring Paul's life will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, March 9, at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, north of Madrid.
Paul was born at the Long Homestead Farm near Luther, Iowa, on September 28, 1914. His parents were Ira and Ruth Jane (Scott) Long. He graduated from Luther High School, where in later years he served as school board President. He was a member of the Luther Co-Op and served on that board. He was confirmed at the Luther Methodist Church and later served on the board of trustees. The Longs were the first pioneer family to arrive in the Luther area in 1849. Paul farmed some of the original land granted to his family from the sovereign. He farmed his entire life and truly loved his vocation.
Paul and Edith (Swanson) Long were married on June 8, 1938, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid, Iowa. They celebrated their 70th Anniversary last June with a family gathering. Paul and Edith retired from farming and moved to Boone, Iowa in 1996. They just recently entered the Eastern Star Home in Boone.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 70 years, Edith of Boone; two children, Arlen (Steve) Poock of Muscatine, Iowa and Carl (Laurie) Long of Madrid, Iowa; three grandchildren, Melanie (Tom) Morgan of Austin, Texas, Brandon Poock of Muscatine and Erik (Sarah) Long of Madrid; two step-grandchildren, Neil Warren of Madrid and Matt (Kate) Warren of Bloomington, Illinois; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace and Benjamin Paul Morgan; and two step-great-grandchildren, Kylie Warren and Jackson Warren. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorials may be made to the Boone County Home Care Services.
