Vera Lawler, age 90, of the Eastern Star Masonic Home, died at the Boone County Hospital on March 19, 2009. A Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Ogden.
Vera was born in Boone County near Ogden on April 13, 1918, the daughter of Philip and Ursula (Lentz) Lawler. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1935. In earlier years, Vera taught in rural school and she attended summer sessions at the University of Northern Iowa and took classes at Boone Junior College and evening classes at Drake University. Later, she worked for Boone County as
Case-work supervisor of the social workers employed in the child protective unit (child neglect, abuse, family problems, and handicapped). She retired in 1981. Vera then performed volunteer work and was president of the Homemakers-Meals on Wheels, member of the Central Iowa Mental Health Center board, Gingerbread House Day Care board, Peterson Foundation board, Boone County Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary board, and District Advisory Committee for the Department of Human Services. As a member of the Boone County Hospital Auxiliary, she volunteered in the Gift Shop. Vera was active in her church with the Catholic Women's Study Group and the Altar Society. She enjoyed walking, playing cards, traveling to Florida and Arkansas, and she worked as an Auctioneer's Clerk for Fitzgerald's Auctioneer Service. Vera enjoyed joining her graduating class on floats in the Ogden Fun Days parades.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Leo Lawler and a sister, Grace Garland. She is survived by a brother, Charles Lawler and wife Susan of Ogden and a sister, Virgene Nation of Grand Junction. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Monday from noon until 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. Monday and a Vigil Service will be at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Visitation continues Tuesday at the funeral chapel from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Memorials may be given to the Hearthstone Memory Care Unit at the Eastern Star Masonic Home, the Sacred Heart School, or the Sacred Heart Church.
