Jack Hohanshelt, age 88, of 1121-13th Street died at the Boone County Hospital on March 27, 2009. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Central Christian Church with Rev. Paul Fraser officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Jack was born on October 10, 1920, north of Boone, the son of Lester and Evelyn (Danly) Hohanshelt. He graduated from Boone High School in 1939 and attended Boone Junior College. Jack served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II where he was a Flight Officer and flew combat glider planes. He was stationed in Germany, Normandy, and Northern France. On November 24, 1945, he married Doris 'Peg' Smith in Boone. For 44 years, Jack was employed with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and worked as a trainman. He retired in 1989. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #817, American Legion Post #56, United Transportation Union Local #316, the National World War II Glider Pilots Association, and the National Wildlife Federation. Jack enjoyed photography, fishing for catfish on the Coon River, camping, and he and Peg became 'Winter Texans' RVing at Rockport, Texas. In earlier years, Jack enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and especially enjoyed growing roses. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan and he enjoyed watching sports and the Discovery Channel on television. Jack also enjoyed feeding and watching his backyard birds and hummingbirds.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Peg, daughter Terry Jo Bochmann, a brother Glenn, twin granddaughters, Amy and Ashley Hohanshelt; and great granddaughter, Francesca Emma Tonelli. Jack is survived by his son, Tom Hohanshelt and wife Audrey, and son-in-law Darrell Bochmann, all of Boone; five grandchildren: Todd Ferry and wife Sandy of Fort Madison, Jason Hohanshelt and wife Melanie of Ankeny, Jocelyn Tonelli and husband Francis of Waukee, Ryan Hohanshelt and fiancée Sarah Gibson of Indianola, and Jared Hohanshelt and girlfriend Holly Griffith of Ames; and six great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Tuesday from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Memorials may be directed to the family to establish a memorial at a later date.
