Glen LaVerne "Vern" Morain, age 69, of Henderson, Nevada, and Boone, died February 27, 2009, at the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, due to complications sustained in a motorcycle accident on January 1st. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone with Rev. Dr. Richard Harken officiating. Burial will be in the Peoples Cemetery, northwest of Woodward.
Vern was born in Ogden, Iowa, on May 19, 1939, the second son of William Glenn and Katharine Marie (Meier) Morain. He attended country school before attending and graduating from Ogden High School in 1957. He also attended night school pursuing an accounting degree at Drake University in Des Moines for a year. Vern married Delores Headley of Boone on October 1, 1960. They spent most of their married life living in Ogden with their children Richard, Sharil, and Robert. The couple divorced in the early 1980's. Vern was also married to Nancy (DuFour Lehner) Morain for 15 years and they resided in Boone. After high school graduation, Vern went to work for Standley Transfer & Storage Co. in Boone, driving for North American Van Lines 17 years. In 1966, a high school friend, Richard Schmidt, and Vern formed Vern's Corporation and built a car wash in Ogden, followed by mobile home parks there a few years later, and then the West Boone Car Wash in 1978. Vern also built and ran Vern Morain's Touchless Carwash in downtown Boone from 1990 to 2003. He became interested in vending and started Morain Vending in 1973. He changed jobs to do part-time maintenance for Citizens National Bank in Boone in 1974 so he could spend more time on his vending company. With the help of his family, Vern was able to build the vending and car wash businesses to the point that it required his full attention in 1989 and he stopped working for the bank. Tired of the snow and cold, Vern retired and sold his businesses and moved to Henderson, Nevada, in 2004. Vern was a member of the former Boone Elks Lodge BPOE #563 for 46 years. He was a charter member of the Boone Day-Breakers Kiwanis Club and current board member of the Henderson Green Valley Kiwanis and frequently did volunteer work through the club. He also enjoyed volunteering with Henderson area grade schools doing "fix-it" jobs. He maintained memberships in a number of vending and car wash associations. He was on a group ride with his motorcycle club, European Motorcycle Owners of Las Vegas, when his accident occurred. Vern enjoyed traveling (especially by motorcycle), photography, reading, emailing jokes, and visiting with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Donald who died in infancy. Vern is survived by two sons, Richard of Duncombe and Robert and wife Abby of Boone; a daughter, Sharil Morain of Oak Park, Illinois; five grandchildren: Connor of Duncombe, and Levi, Mahala, Kade, and Gage of Boone; a brother, Daryl J. Morain of Ogden; a sister, Donna Grimm and husband James of Woodward; and several nephews and nieces.
