Carl E. Cross, Sr., age 82, of Boone, Iowa, died Thursday, February 19, 2009, at the Evangelical Free Church Home. Funeral services are Monday, February 23, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Tim Trudeau officiating. Burial will be in the Boone Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Carl was born in Des Moines on December 1, 1926, the son of Thomas and E. Lenora (Boatwright) Cross. He served with the United States Army during World War II, where he specialized in underwater demolition. He married Janet Jackson in Boone on October 17, 1953. Carl worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 36 years, first as a switchman, then a brakeman, and finally as a conductor. He retired May 22, 1988. Carl was a member of the Grace Community Church in Boone and the National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees. He enjoyed watching and feeding birds, watching television, inventing things, and outdoor grilling.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence. He is survived by his wife, Janet of Boone; two sons, Carl "Ed" Cross Jr. and wife Letha of Boone and Pastor Marvin "Le" Cross and wife Terri of Kirksville, Missouri; a daughter, Marsha Arrowood and husband Matthew of Boone; a half sister, Edna Bullard; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Sunday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Monday from 8:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral chapel.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be used at their discretion.
