Wilma Sutton, age 84, of 714 W. Walnut Street in Ogden, died January 28, 2009, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services are Saturday, January 31, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the Bethel Church, southwest of Boone with Rev. D. Ray Hoke officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden.
Wilma was born in rural Mazon, Illinois, on September 17, 1924, the daughter of William and Eva (Nelson) Fillman. She graduated from Mazon High School in May of 1942 and then attended the University of Illinois in 1942 and 1943. Wilma taught rural school in Illinois for two years. On December 30, 1943, she married Donald Sutton in Mazon. The couple moved to Dexter, Iowa, when her husband returned from military service in the Navy. They bought a farm near Beaver in 1948 and had a dairy farm as well as a grain operation. Wilma began to work at the Boone County Sheriff's office on January 1, 1973. A few months later, she graduated from the Iowa Sheriff and Deputies School. She was appointed a Boone County Deputy upon graduation and retired from this position on January 1, 1990. Wilma was very active in the Republican Party and at one time, served as the Boone County Party Chairman. She enjoyed baking, especially cookies, and she also enjoyed her grandchildren and their activities.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald of 62 years, a son, Jeff, a grandson James Sutton and a brother, Eldon Fillman. She is survived by two sons, John and wife, Joan of Ogden and Jerry and wife Laurie of Liberty, Missouri, and two daughters, Sandra Beatty and husband Bruce of Neola and Cynthia Schumacher and husband Warren of Rippey; 10 grandchildren: Brenda Jones, Valerie Hadan, Matt Schumacher, Monica Rings, Jennifer Herrick, Jodi Sutton, Jason Sutton, Julie Doughty, Jordan Sutton, Jacob Sutton, and Ryan Braland; 14 great grandchildren: Alexandra and Eric Jones, Coy, Jasmin and Isaac Schumacher, Anessa, Joseph, and Lindsey Jerdee, Ian and Johnathan Herrick, Jaymin and Alyvia Sutton, Ronald and Owen Van Cannon, Tommy Doughty, and Connor and Julia Hilz, and Zeek and Tristan Pearson; a brother, John Fillman and wife, Helen of Mazon, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Judy and husband Richard of Streator, Illinois and Lois Adkins and husband Charles of Mazon, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Friends may call at the Bethel Church on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday at the Bethel Church from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
Memorials may be given to the Jim Sutton Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of City State Bank in Ogden.
