Roland "Rollie" Stephens, age 78, of 796 Leaf Road, died February 4, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. His body has been cremated and a Memorial Service will be Sunday evening, February 8, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial of his cremains will be at a later date.
Rollie was born May 31, 1930, in Ringgold County the son of Paul and Goldie (Mathews) Stephens. He graduated from Ames High School in Ames in 1948. Rollie married Ann Wilson in Ames on August 8, 1951. Following high school, he worked as an electrical lineman for the City of Ames. Rollie served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He dairy farmed in the Alden and Buckeye areas, worked for the Ames Public Works, was a maintenance electrician at Quinn's for a short while, and lastly, was employed at Iowa State University as an electrician installing electrical systems and building automation. He also farmed in Boone and was owner of Triple R Aggregates. In earlier years, he was a 4-H leader. Rollie served as 5th ward councilman for Boone and was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, American Legion #56, and Loyal Order of Moose #104. Rollie enjoyed raising horses and livestock and fishing. He also enjoyed the annual Stephens Reunions with family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Roger, and two sisters, Pauline and Velta. Rollie is survived by his wife, Ann of Boone; two sons, Dean and wife Jodi and Ron and wife Sheri, all of Boone; two daughters, Rosie Burdess and husband Michael of Boone and MarJean Fitzgerald of Ames; a brother, Rick Stephens and wife Liz of Rochester, Michigan; two sisters, Rosalie Nelson of Ames and Marilyn Mulanix and husband Tom of Urbandale; twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Sunday from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
