Mary Ann Zeigler Eckberg of Bend, Oregon passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009 of natural causes. She was 87 years old.
She was born July 2, 1921 in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis and Harriet Zeigler. Her older brother was the late John Hall Zeigler. Boone remained her home throughout her childhood.
Mrs. Eckberg attended the University of Iowa, where she graduated in 1943, with a degree in Fine Art. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
On December 28, 1943 she married Philip Mercer Eckberg, also of Boone. Her husband was a career Air Force officer, and they raised two sons while stationed at numerous bases across the country. Upon her husband's retirement from the military in 1963, the family moved to Bend. Mr. Eckberg passed away in April of 2008.
While primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Eckberg worked as an assistant in the Bend Public Library in the late 1960s and then as a teachers aide and assistant librarian at Bear Creek Elementary School for a number of years. Her employment reflected her lifelong love of books and reading.
She also took special enjoyment in knitting, sewing, cooking and travel. Her talent in the kitchen was renowned, and enjoyed by family and friends alike. Over the years, she and her late husband traveled extensively in Europe and the Orient, and those trips were often reflected in her recipes.
She was a member of the EA Chapter of P.E.O. in Bend, as well as the American Association of University Women. She and her husband were also active in the Central Oregon Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
She will be greatly missed by her two sons Eric Eckberg and Chris Eckberg and daughter-in-law Gabrielle Taylor, all of Bend. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Betty Eckberg, a nephew, three nieces and their children.
No memorial service is planned, and she will be interred with her late husband at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Gifts in lieu of flowers should be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Boone News Republican
