Robert Arnold Nibel, 82, Fort Dodge, formerly of Paton, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at his home.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boxholm, with Rev. Rod Meyer officiating. Visitation: Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carson - Stapp Funeral Home, Dayton. Burial will be in the Paton Township Cemetery. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Paton American Legion, Post #417.
Robert A. Nibel was born to Harry and Laura (Weeks) Nibel Dec. 24, 1925 in Laurens. He and his family moved around the Havelock and Laurens area where he attended several country schools before settling in the Paton area where he graduated from Paton High School in 1943. He attended Iowa State University studying engineering, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1944.
After his discharge from the service in December 1945, he returned to Laurens where he met his sweetheart, Helen Kathryn Wilson. They were married July 20, 1947 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Laurens. They began their life farming in the Havelock area then moved to Paton in 1956 to live, work and own the family farm. After making several improvements to the property including the building of a new home, in 1981 Bob witnessed his farm become a Family Century Farm.
Prior to his farming retirement in 1997 he enjoyed woodworking. This became his passion and woodworking pieces are cherished by many. In 2007 he and his wife Helen moved to Fort Dodge where he continued his woodworking and riding his scooter around the neighborhood.
Bob served on several church committees at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boxholm. He enjoyed singing and most recently participating with the Barber Shop Harmony Chorus.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Harry, mother Laura (Weeks), brothers, Clayton, Henry, and Lowell.
He is survived by Helen, his wife of 61 years; four daughters; Elizabeth (Beth) Schulz (Roger) of Poulsbo, WA; Virginia (Ginny) Raddatz (Kent) of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; Kathleen (Kathy) Hulsebus (Steve) of Fort Dodge, IA; and Roberta (Robbie) Baker (David) of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
